“Officer Fields, my favorite soon-to-be detective,” greeted Vivian, smiling at the gangly policeman as he bounded into her office. “Please, have a seat.”

“Ms. Vivian,” said Fields, taking a seat in the chair in front of her desk. “My favorite Palmchat Gazette reporter. How are you?”

“I’m wondering how the Phoebe Wall investigation is going,” said Vivian. “It’s been a week since I called you guys about that autopsy report and my readers need to know what’s happening. Is the police department still looking at Phoebe’s death as suspicious, or have you decided that she was murdered?”

“You know I don’t mind giving you information, but I can’t be quoted Ms. Vivian,” said the officer, showing teeth and gums as he smiled. “I have to be an anonymous source.”

Vivian nodded. “I understand. So, what can you tell me?”

Officer Fields sighed. “Detective Janvier thinks it’s murder. The autopsy report that Nurse Stewart showed you was the real report. Janvier questioned the hospital pathologist, Dr. LeVert, and she confessed to changing the cause of death on the autopsy from acute cyanide poisoning to narcotic intoxication.”

“Did the hospital instruct her to do that?”

“Dr. LeVert claims that Dr. Paul Pisko told her to change the autopsy,” said Officer Fields. “According to Dr. LeVert, Dr. Pisko told Dr. LeVert to show him the pathology report before she shared it with anyone else. When Pisko saw cyanide on the autopsy, he was afraid the hospital would be sued, and maybe even face criminal charges, for not protecting Phoebe and allowing someone to come into the hospital and kill her.”

“Is that why Dr. LeVert agreed to change the autopsy?” asked Vivian. “She was concerned about the hospital’s liability?”

“Not exactly,” said Fields. “Here’s where it gets a little seedy. Dr. LeVert and Dr. Pisko were doctors with benefits, so to speak. But, Dr. LeVert is also a married woman, and Dr. Pisko likes to make videos, so Pisko forced Dr. LeVert to change the autopsy. LeVert says she wanted to tell the truth from the beginning, but Pisko blackmailed her. Dr. Pisko, of course, denied everything.”

“I’m sure he did,” said Vivian, shaking her head.

“Seems to me Pisko decided that medical negligence on the part of the hospital was better than people finding out that a patient had been murdered at the hospital,” said Officer Fields. “Between Dr. LeVert and Nurse Stewart, Janvier was able to get a timeline of events. Basically, Nurse Stewart finds Phoebe dead. She calls Pisko. Pisko calls his nephew, a security guard at the hospital, to cut the power on the north wing of the third floor. During the blackout, according to Melissa, she and Pisko removed Phoebe’s body and took her to the exit stairwell where they pushed her down the stairs.”

“Crazy,” said Vivian. “So, has Dr. Pisko been arrested?”

“Not yet, but Janvier is coming up with a list of charges,” said Officer Fields. “One of them is improper handling of a corpse. Nurse Stewart is facing charges, too, for her part in Phoebe Wall’s death and the death of another patient, which Dr.
